چکیده

Canine elbow dysplasia is a complex of diseases that includes ununited anconeal process, fragmented medial coronoid process, osteochondrosis of the medial humeral condyle, and elbow incongruity. Three causes of elbow dysplasia have been proposed: osteochondrosis, trochlear notch dysplasia, and asynchronous growth of the radius and ulna. Genetics, nutritional imbalance, growth disturbances, and trauma may influence the development and expression of elbow dysplasia. Canine elbow dysplasia (CED) is a term that causes controversy and confusion among veterinarians. In its broadest sense, CED is used to describe all developmental abnormalities involving the elbow joint. The International Elbow Working Group adopted the term elbow dysplasia to describe all conditions resulting in arthrosis of the elbow joint regardless of the underlying cause. CED now typically means a complex of developmental abnormalities of the elbow, including ununited anconeal process (UAP), fragmented medial coronoid process (FMCP), osteochondrosis (OC) of the medial humeral condyle, and elbow incongruity. This article reviews the basic anatomy of the elbow joint and the proposed causes of CED. ANATOMY The elbow (cubital joint) includes the humeroradial joint, humeroulnar joint, and proximal radioulnar joint (Figure 1). A common joint capsule encompasses all three articulations. The capitulum of the humeral condyle articulates with the radial head to form the humeroradial joint, which supports most of the weight transmitted through the elbow joint. The trochlea of the humeral condyle articulates with the trochlear (semilunar) notch of the ulna to form the humeroulnar joint. The olecranon fossa of the humeral condyle articulates with the anconeal process of the ulna during joint extension beyond 90 ̊ and restricts movement of the elbow to the sagittal plane (Figure 2). The proximal radioulnar joint allows limited rotation of the elbow. The medial collateral ligament limits abduction n Three separate articulations make up the elbow (cubital)

Identification of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) for Canine Hip Dysplasia and Canine Elbow Dysplasia in Bernese Mountain Dogs

A genome-wide association study for canine hip dysplasia (CHD) and canine elbow dysplasia (CED) using the Illumina canine high density bead chip had been performed for 174 Bernese mountain dogs. General and mixed linear model analysis identified two different regions with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on dog chromosome (CFA) 14 significantly associated with CHD and a further significan...

Incidence of canine elbow dysplasia in South Africa.

In South Africa, 1919 canine elbow dysplasia grading evaluations were performed from 1999-2006. Of these 1827 were evaluated by the senior author and form the basis of this article. Each report recorded the breed, age, sex, side affected and elbow dysplasia grading. The relationship between breed, age, sex, side affected, origin of radiographs and elbow dysplasia incidence was then analysed. St...

Canine elbow dysplasia: aetiopathogenesis and current treatment recommendations.

Elbow dysplasia is a common debilitating condition of large and giant breed dogs. Environmental factors and a complex genetic heritability play a role in predisposing dogs to elbow dysplasia with two aetiopathogeneses suggested for the development of the disease. Osteochondrosis was initially thought to cause elbow dysplasia, but more recent evidence has strongly supported various forms of join...

A clinically oriented comprehensive pictorial review of canine elbow anatomy.

The clinically oriented canine elbow anatomy in its complexity earned a high importance in surgery especially after multiple imaging modalities have been used in the benefit of diagnosis and treatment of canine elbow disorders. The bony, joint, and muscular structures, the arteries, the veins and the nerves supplying the elbow are described and illustrated in textbooks and atlases in the contex...

Long-term genetic selection reduced prevalence of hip and elbow dysplasia in 60 dog breeds

Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) and elbow dysplasia (ED) impact the health and welfare of all dogs. The first formally organized assessment scheme to improve canine health centered on reducing the prevalence of these orthopedic disorders. Phenotypic screening of joint conformation remains the currently available strategy for breeders to make selection decisions. The present study evaluated the effic...
